Draw a frame, tap + for the next one, and change the drawing a little. The last frame shows faintly in red underneath (onion skin), so each drawing follows on from it.

How to animate here

  1. 01Press Start animating. A blank frame opens, ready to draw on with your finger, a mouse or a pen.
  2. 02Draw the first picture. Keep it simple: a ball, a face, a stick figure.
  3. 03Tap + for a new frame. The last frame shows faintly in red underneath (onion skin).
  4. 04Draw the next picture, moved or changed a little. Repeat: 12 frames make one second at 12 frames per second.
  5. 05Press Play to watch it, then Export to save it as a video.

Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. Every drawing tool, onion skin, 3 layers, playback and 720p video export are free, with no ads and no sign-up. Free videos carry a small animationapponline.com mark in the corner. Lifetime, one payment of $9.99, adds up to 10 layers, removes the mark, and adds 1080p video, sound, GIF and PNG-frame export.

Is this an animation app I have to download?

No. It's a 2D animation app that runs online, in Safari or Chrome on iPhone, iPad and Android, and in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox on computers and Chromebooks. To open it in one tap, add it to your Home Screen from the browser's Share menu.

Does it work with Apple Pencil?

Yes, in Safari on iPad. Pressing harder makes the pen and pencil lines thicker. Once it sees a pen, your fingers move and zoom the canvas instead of drawing, so your palm doesn't leave marks; you can change that under More.

Where are my animations saved?

In your browser on this device, automatically, a moment after every line you draw. Safari deletes a site's saved data after 7 days without a visit unless you add the site to your Home Screen, so on an iPhone or iPad add it there, or download your animation from Your animations.

How many frames per second should I use?

12 frames per second is the classic hand-drawn look: films run at 24, and most drawings are held for two frames ("on twos"). Beginners can start at 8 to draw fewer pictures. You can change the speed at any time.

What are layers for?

Layers let you keep parts of a drawing apart: the background on one, a character on another, colour under the lines on a third. Each frame has its own drawing on each layer, so you can redraw the character and copy the background.

Are my drawings uploaded anywhere?

No. Your drawings, frames and the videos you make all stay in your browser on this device. Nothing is sent to us or stored on a server.
