Free animation app for PC and Chromebook
A free 2D animation app for Windows PCs, Macs and Chromebooks that runs in the browser: draw frame by frame with onion skin and layers, then export a video.
Draw a frame, tap + for the next one, and change the drawing a little. The last frame shows faintly in red underneath (onion skin), so each drawing follows on from it.
Animating on a computer
- 01Open this page in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari and press Start animating. Nothing to install.
- 02Draw with the mouse, a touchscreen, or a drawing tablet with a pen (it passes pressure in Chrome and Edge).
- 03Zoom with Ctrl + the mouse wheel, move around with Space + drag, and undo with Ctrl + Z.
- 04Switch tools from the keyboard: B pen, P pencil, M marker, E eraser, G fill, I pick a colour.
- 05Use the arrow keys to step through frames, N for a new frame, and Export to save an MP4.
Why a browser animation app
Phone animation apps don't run on most computers, and school Chromebooks usually can't install anything. A browser app runs anywhere Chrome or another modern browser does, and your animations are saved in that browser.
On a school Chromebook it needs no install and no admin; on a home PC or Mac it opens in a tab. If you move between devices, download your animation as a file from Your animations and open it on the other one.
Drawing with a mouse
- Turn line smoothing to More (under More) for steadier curves.
- Draw big and zoom out: lines drawn zoomed in look neater at normal size.
- Use the fill bucket for colour instead of scribbling it in.
- Keep the character simple: round shapes and few details are easiest to repeat in every frame.
- A cheap drawing tablet makes a huge difference if you animate a lot.
Questions
Is there a free animation app for PC?
Yes. This one runs in your browser on Windows, Mac and Chromebook, with nothing to download: pen, pencil, marker, eraser, fill, onion skin, 3 layers, playback and 720p video export are free.
Can I use a phone animation app on my computer?
Most phone animation apps aren't made for computers. A browser animation app does the same job (frames, onion skin, layers, export) on any computer.
Does it work on a school Chromebook?
Yes, in Chrome, with nothing to install, unless your school blocks the website. Animations are saved in the Chromebook's browser; download them to keep a copy.
Can I use a drawing tablet?
Yes. Pen tablets that work in the browser pass pressure to the pen and pencil, so lines get thicker as you press. Chrome and Edge support this on Windows and Mac.
Can I move an animation from my phone to my computer?
Yes. On the phone, open Your animations and download the animation as a .zip. On the computer, open Your animations and choose Open a downloaded animation.
Are my drawings uploaded anywhere?
No. Your drawings, frames and the videos you make all stay in your browser on this device. Nothing is sent to us or stored on a server.
